Choptank Electric Cooperative is an electric utility distribution service of the people, for the people. Its is one of 700 cooperatives in 44 different states ran by Touchstone Energy Cooperative. As a cooperative members owned service company. Headquartered in Denton, Maryland Choptanks energized its first 78 miles of line on December of 1939 in Caroline County and continues to provide for 52,140 residential, commercial, and industrial accounts in the 9 counties of the Eastern Maryland shore. Their motto, along with the other 699 Touchstone Co-ops throughout the United States, is to serve its members with integrity, accountability, innovation, and a longstanding commitment to communities. The membership is made up of any individual who holds an account with Choptank Electric Cooperative. After the end of each year members/owners are eligible for a capital credit. If, after operating costs, capital improvements, and cash reserves, there is any money left over the company will send “capital credit” to its members/owners. This amount is allocated according to member/owner history (time) with Choptank and the amount of energy purchased. At the end of 2010, Choptank returned 1.5 million in capital credit.
The website is user –friendly, family and community focused. Besides the normal necessities of a “customer” available on the website, there also is info on safety, energy saving tips, monthly newsletter, co-op member info, and even a link for children more about electricity called “Just for kids”.
